It seems there is a new diet book or weight loss program that enters the marketplace almost daily.

All of them will help you lose weight only to find it again, unless you follow the two things that each of these books and programs agree on which is to drink plenty of water and exercise.

Studies show that 94% of all women, not just larger women or plus size women, suffer from a negative body image. That means only 6% of all women feel great about themselves. 94% keep the billion-dollar diet industry in business yet 98% of diets don’t work. The key to creating physical, mental, and emotional health and well-being, is to shape up, tone up and focus on fitness instead of dieting. The road to self-improvement is through increasing movement. The way to a sexy, toned, fit body is EXERCISE!

The key to getting fit is movement. Study after study shows that exercise benefits us in many ways. These benefits include, but are not limited to, increasing self esteem, lessening anxiety, helping us to better cope with stressful situations, lifting depression, generally improving mood, improving the immune functions, aiding in better sleep and energizing us.

When we exercise we not only increase our present energy level, but we also increase our ability to create more energy for ourselves – energy we can use in all areas of our lives.

People who don’t exercise tend to be more sluggish and have less energy and less enthusiasm for life. It has been found that nearly half of all women do not get enough exercise. The risk of developing health problems such as heart disease, diabetes and breast cancer are dramatically increased later in life by the lack of movement now. Exercise can actually increase your mental ability as well. Exercise helps to provide oxygen to the brain, which helps you maintain mental focus and alertness.

When we starve the body with diets, we literally put the metabolism into survival mode. It slows down because it thinks the body is dying. This is one reason it’s so difficult to lose weight. The body literally shuts down the very process that burns the calories. As we get older we lose between 1-2 pounds of muscle every year due to a sedentary lifestyle. Dieting as well will accelerate the loss of muscle tone. Since muscle weight is metabolically active, a pound of muscle burns close to 50 calories a day even while you are asleep. When you diet you are losing that metabolically active muscle along with the fat and as a result lowering your metabolism. We all know what happens when our metabolic rate decreases. When you increase movement you speed up your metabolism, burning more calories.

Perhaps the most amazing benefit of all is that when you start to exercise, your body naturally begins craving healthier foods. That’s right! You don’t have to change your eating habits if you don’t want to. Start to increase movement and your body will actually require less food and you’ll notice a decrease in your appetite. The food your body does request will be healthier, and will provide your body with the energy it needs to continue exercising. You’ll naturally be drawn away from processed foods with no nutrients to whole foods loaded with energy.
